BRILLIANTISM: RADIOHEAD

RADIOHEAD

Evidence.

Sunday morning, while playing beach volleyball under the clearest sky ever to hover above South Lake Tahoe, I received a wonderful phone call. We went to the lake for our drummer Noah's 24th birthday. Easy and I rolled up after work on Friday and wandered around the casinos for an hour trying to surprise Noah, having lied that we "wouldn't be making it until tomorrow." The ooze of wacky carpets and beeping machines and costumed waitresses was hypnotic.

On Saturday, I ate four vitamin C tablets, drank four cups of water, and had some orange juice. Juiced, as it were, Easy and I reentered California and hiked from about 7,500 feet down to 6,200 feet, to the Emerald Bay. I napped on a picnic table (see evidence, above) about six feet from the lapping lake. I dreamed of driving a boat with, of all things, a sand volleyball court built right into aft deck. When someone would hit it over the side I'd dive off the boat to get the ball

We ate dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe next to Scott Ian's sleeveless shirt and a White Zombie platinum record. Noah won about $20 during dinner on a boxing match. Later, I danced to a Black Eyed Peas song, I think. At some point I went to sleep.

After check out on Sunday we drove west, which is one of my four favorite directions. We stopped at Zephyr Cove, where I realized that Tahoe-ans are good at naming places. There were beautiful people everywhere and everybody—Easy, Noah, The Don, and Christiansen—smiled in the sun. After eating meat and eggs and my first cup of coffee in days, we went to the beach and looked great and played volleyball. My friend Shawn Harris from The Matches called in the middle of the game to say he'd be spinning one of my band's songs on Live 105, the FM band alternative radio station in San Francisco.

That night, as I composed this entry, I heard my band on the radio in the city I live in. We were sandwiched between a Matches cover of Radiohead's "Bodysnatchers" and something lame like She Wants Revenge. We sounded great. What a day.

The Matches covering "Bodysnatchers" in Australia. They do a great job with this, I feel.

  1. So, I guess there's no need to tell you that you were on the radio Sunday night, being that you heard it. I had to babysit my 2 year old niece that night, which is not such an easy task. Between her using me as a jungle gym and trying to keep her from killing the gold fish I managed to flip on the radio. I knew The Matches were going to be on, but I missed almost the entire thing. I did hear them play BRL though, and my first thought was- Hey I know this song!
